The Press Council held a panel “How to write an internal code of good journalistic practice” at the UNS Press Center today and presented the media with which they collaborated in drafting internal ethical rules.
Media expert Ljiljana Zurovac and Press Council Secretary General Gordana Novaković collaborated with seven media outlets on drafting internal documents, and representatives of local media Storyteller and Lozničke novosti spoke about the challenges they had in the process of drafting them.
The survey “Are the media ready for internal codes”, conducted last year by the Press Council, showed that 76 percent of the surveyed media would accept assistance in drafting (these) internal documents, which prompted the Press Council to implement this program, Gordana Novakovic noted.
She also stated that the media dealt with various topics that they defined in internal documents, including reporting in crisis situations, copyright protection, personal data protection, the relationship between owners and management of the media and the editorial staff, and work in the media in the languages of national minorities.
“Internal rules are a new level of regulation in the media,” said Ljiljana Zurovac, noting that they represent a great help to newsrooms in specific reporting situations.
The development of internal codes of good journalistic practice is one of the activities of the Action Plan for the implementation of the media strategy for the period 2020-2025, and the Press Council implemented the project with the support of the OSCE Mission to Serbia.
